business-planning

Planning is a major component of structuring a strategically successful business.  When starting a business a number of documents come into play including an internet marketing plan, a business plan, a marketing plan, a mission statement, a vision statement, financial plans, etc.  One major step that businesses often don’t take seriously is internet marketing goals and objectives…a major part of smart internet marketing and your internet marketing plan.

The first step is to determine exactly what you expect to get out of your business this year. Setting realistic goals is not only crucial; it’s the most important step.  Additionally, these goals don’t necessarily have to be financial. They should be a mix of financial and non-financial goals to ensure your brand and your product get appropriate exposure.

Here are 3 goals than any business should include in their internet marketing plan.

Goal 1: Increase the number of business leads to generate a return on your investment

When online users get to your website what do they see? Is your site just as good as your competitors? Can they find what they need in less than 2 clicks? These questions are imperative to online success because you want your visitors to come back. Repeat visits can help you create a lifetime relationship with your customers.

Goal 3: Develop a strategy to engage visitors

We have all heard that Search Engine Optimization (SEO) keywords can improve your websites’ SEO, increase your search engine ranking and consistently deliver great results for years if done properly.  But how is it done properly? Anyone can pick a few keywords they think will work and try to incorporate those into their site.  However, smart internet marketing tells us to take our time and strategically pick each keyword to ensure success.

When deciding what keywords to uses ask yourself 3 questions:

How Will People Find You?

hide_and_seek
The first step is to write down all the keywords that you feel people will type into search engines when looking for the information or products that you are selling. Don’t Guess! Ask family, friends, and customers which keywords they would use to find your information.  For example you may think that someone would type in “oprah and kelly clarkson” to search for that episode when actually most users are typing in “kelly clarkson on oprah” instead.

Can A Machine Help Me?

Okay, it’s a weird title but it works.  It’s called a computer and the internet. They both can help you pick out keywords by using a tool called a keyword suggestion tool.  SEO Book Keyword Suggestion Tool is pretty neat.

What’s My Competition Doing?

You can find out exactly what keywords your competition is using by checking out their website page source.  Most browsers will allow you to go to View and then Page Source and you can view  your competition keywords to see what you are missing.

So remember… smart internet marketing  + smart keywords = amazing SEO

Last week we started the discussion on how on the top of search engines by using smart internet marketing; here’s part 2:

Step 3: Have A Good Website Description
Having a good website description is a key part of Google understanding who you are and where you fit into.  This should also be the first couple of sentences of your body text.

Step 4: Increase your Website Content
No matter what you sell and how many keywords you may use, content always wins.  Make sure that each page of your website has a minimum word count of 300 words.  But don’t overdo it! You also want to make sure that you don’t go over 750 words.

Step 5: Choose Your Website Domain Carefully.
If you sell pink widgets what the point of naming your website www.sellstuff.com?  Name your website www.pink-widgets.com.  Separate your keywords by hyphens and search engines will find you!

Next week, we will explore additional tips about how to increase your search engine ranking and start focusing on smart internet marketing.

Online holiday marketing can be intimidating especially if you do not know what you are doing or what your company’s holiday goals are this season. In order to make sure you have your holiday hat on straight here are a few tips on how to leverage your online presence this season.

1. Create a Holiday Gift Guide
Holiday Gift Guides are a great way to get new customers to take a look at your product. If you are not creating one yourself, and you should, then contact those who are and get your products on the list. If your business focuses on services, create a company gift card and use that as a great product offering this holiday.

2. Use Your Company Blog
Placing your holiday products, discounts, coupons, or offerings on your blog is important. First, write consecutive posts about what your company is offering and secondly make sure it is viewable on the sidebar of your company blog so users can easily find out what’s going on.

3. Contact Your Affiliates
If have an affiliate program then offer your affiliates additional holiday bonuses or gifts for directing traffic to your site. Reward the year’s top affiliates with a shout-out on your company blog or additional incentives to get them excited about what your company has to offer.

4. Leverage Social Networking
Get on your Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace accounts and network your heart out. Let everyone know what’s new this holiday season and make sure to thank everyone who has supported you throughout the year.

5. Give It Away
Contact blogs that are related to your product or services and offer to give their readers a chance to win a coveted product or service that you offer.

Remember, the holidays don’t have to be a scary time of the year, use it to increase clients, consumers, and brand awareness.

Happy Holidays!
